THE CLIENT PERSPECTIVE

Throughout Beauty Week I have been giving you tips, tricks and advice from experienced professionals in their own craft. Today I wanted to switch it up a bit! I wanted to share a client’s perspective as well as some more info on brows…

Let’s jump right in…

Sabrina Dandridge is an actor and model currently living in NYC. I had the pleasure of meeting Sabrina many years ago when she modeled for my makeup line in Rhode Island where we both happen to be from. She was fantastic of course! I asked Sabrina to share her thoughts with me about getting her makeup done professionally.

Hear Sabrina’s point of view below on what it is like to be the one sitting in the chair…

In my opinion, brows are the bane of the face. It is important to have a groomed brow, and shaped nicely. I get my makeup done fairly often in the line of work I am in (actor, model) and the one thing I notice, that is consistent across the board, is the lack of knowledge, attention and tools involving eyebrow presentation. I almost always have to touch up my brows with my own researched products and proven tools, in order to achieve a more polished and flattering look. Glossier has a product, called Boy Brow, that has changed the game of brow enhancing (for me). I can’t recommend the product enough. It is by far one of the best on the market right now. I’m not being paid to say that, either. Makeup Artists, listen up!

A few things I love about getting my makeup done are the obvious pampering aspect. I won’t deny I enjoy that! Another is access to knowledge. I learn something valuable from every Makeup Artist I meet and work with. They are the experts, after-all, and they all have different information, tips, techniques and tools I like to absorb. I then apply what I learn to enhance my own routines and add to my beauty regime necessities.

Lastly, I love the creative aspect of what can be created and the stories that can be told through the medium of makeup and beauty platforms. I love being a canvas for that sort of expression. It’s a type of art, and I can appreciate the artistry that goes into it.

Want to learn more about Sabrina? Visit her on Instagram @theladymuse or her website here…

Chelsea Barber has another perspective I would like to share. Chelsea also modeled for my makeup line many years ago when we both lived in Los Angeles. She is now living in New Orleans and is one of the hair stylists I featured in HAIR TIPS-PART ONE.

Hear what Chelsea has to say below…

Getting your makeup done is fun because it’s someone’s else’s vision of the beauty they see in you. Whether it is enhancing your eyes, your jawline, lips etc. a canvas through an artist’s unique mind.

You get to see different versions of yourself. Find out what you like and do not like.

Are you in the New Orleans area? Click here for more info on Chelsea Barber.

Back to BROWS…

Eyebrow Microblading is becoming more and more popular by the day. I know I have been dying to get them done. I just wish I was in Florida right now so that my good friend Gina could help a sister out!

What is Microblading?

It’s a Semi-Permanent tattooing technique that has hair like strokes to look like real hair. You will no longer need to fill in your sparse eyebrows or if you don’t have any.

Great for people who have lost their eyebrows or just want to open up their eye area.

As eyebrows frame your face for an amazing natural lift and feel like you can leave the house without any makeup.

Thanks again Gina for being a part of Beauty Week! If you are in Southern Florida you can find Gina’s contact info below. Be sure to tell her I sent you!

MAKEUP TIPS FROM THE PROS

As promised I have asked a few fellow Pro Makeup Artists to share some of their favorite tips. I must say they are pretty dam good.

As always if you have a question let us know in the comments and we will be more than happy to answer them this weekend for our Q&A.

Ready for some fab tips? Here we go…

Tip #1: Skin Care is just as important as Makeup! I cannot tell you how many times clients sit in my chair and do not care for their skin properly. I find in particular, woman who have oily skin. Either they don’t use moisturizer at all OR they overdo it when it comes to exfoliating & masks.

Please do your research and invest in your skin, not only is it preventative care but it also affects the way your Makeup wears. I also highly recommend using a Foundation Primer, my favorite is Colorscience Skin Brightening Primer.

Tip #2: Foundation! If I had a dollar for EVERY TIME someone told me that they don’t wear Foundation because they like to look natural but then bust out a FULL COVERAGE foundation POWDER….I’d be Rich! I have news for you, you are wearing FOUNDATION.

Thick powder is not Natural and has the tendency to look more cakey than any liquid or cream and let me tell you why…

When you are using a Full coverage powder, most likely you are going to touch up with it right? Right!

The thing about that is that you are actually caking on layer upon layer of full coverage.

For a natural look, I like to build coverage with the liquid or cream foundation and set with a translucent powder.

Tip #3: Not everyone needs to be contoured to the Gawds! Yes, I said it! Of course we’ve all seen that Meme of Mona Lisa with and without contour and yes, some of us feel invincible with a good contour…

But this technique is called Corrective Makeup. Not EVERY face needs correcting. Some people are blessed with beautiful bone structure and really don’t need this at all, but with the contouring trend being so huge I find that almost every woman that sits in my chair says “I need to learn how to contour!” The fact is that there is no need to go so Hammer Time.

I personally show clients that subtle is always better, especially if you are someone whose daily makeup routine is 5–15 min. I really stray away from making a road map out of any face (you’ve seen it, especially with beauty gurus on YouTube and Instagram where they lay down both the light cream and dark creams at the same time and then try to blend everything like nobody’s business).

In my opinion, you are creating so much more work and it feels more complicated and scary to the everyday woman who needs simplicity in her routine. I always recommend to do foundation first, and then build on that. If you choose to contour, I usually suggest to use a cream as that is the easiest to blend out and looks most natural. This will help you ensure that you don’t apply more than you need to and you will still feel like yourself when you look in the mirror.

Tip #1: Lighting. Always do your makeup in front of a window if possible, you get natural light and you can see exactly how the makeup looks on you. From the correct color to how dark it’s going on.

Tip #2: Always layer a light powder over any foundation before adding contour or blush so it won’t get muddy.

Tip #3: Use a correcting concealer with some salmon to deep orange depending on your skin tone to cancel out dark circles, before applying foundation.

Don’t use a concealer that’s 3 shades lighter because it won’t cancel out the blue undertone in the dark circles it will just make it look ashy.

Angella Dutton Theriault-Boston Beauty By Angella

My favorite makeup tip is to put your moisturizer in the fridge. Not only does it help keep a bit longer, nut the cool application helps to soothe, tighten skin, minimize the look of pores, and reduce inflammation and puffiness in the skin. It’s a must for me!

Lastly, here are a few of my suggestions I love sharing with clients…

Tip #1: If you are going to do a heavy eye makeup please do that before any foundation is placed on skin. It will allow for a much cleaner look. To clean up the fallout (excess shadow) use a clean foundation brush with a touch of moisturizer on it. It will act just like an eraser. Once clean and dry move on to foundation, powder, bronzer, etc.

Tip #2: Keep your brushes clean. Bacteria and dust can build up in your brushes over time. If they are not clean you are placing that into your skin which can cause an infection or allergic reaction.

Use a brush cleaner once or twice a week. This will not only clean but strengthen the hair of the brush. Once a month I clean them in baby shampoo and then let them air dry overnight. Make sure you lay them flat after washing so that the water does not go through the barrels and un-glue the brush.

Tip #3: Products that I tell clients they should always have on them for touch ups are concealer, powder, lipstick, gloss. Products you should have period are lash primer, skin primer and setting spray.

WOW! These ladies definitely have some pretty amazing tips!

So I haven’t updated my portfolio in forever but if you would like to see some of my work you can find it on YouTube right here…

Well I hope that you enjoyed some of these tips and learned a few tricks. Feel free to reach out to any of us for questions or leave a comment below in the comments.

HAIR TIPS FROM PROS. PART ONE.

As Beauty Week continues I wanted to share some great hair tips straight from a few of my friends that happen to be amazing at their craft. To the extent that I consider them all Pros. And it is not just me but everyone else that sits in their chair! Check out what hair tips they had to share with us below…

And stay tuned for Hair Tips-Part Two…

As you may or may not know I currently live in Las Vegas so let’s see what a local Pro has to share…

Alana Castillo

Instagram

Tip #1: One thing people in Las Vegas do is mistake damaged hair with dry hair. They will always go for repair shampoos and treatments. Almost all of those “repair” products use a high amount of keratin protein which helps build the strength to the hair. But when over used on dry damaged hair it can build up the hair follicle too much and it will get too strong get brittle and break off. Instead of going for the “repair” products go for the Moisture or Hydration. The dry hair follicle needs moisture and hydration! It’s so dry and hot in Vegas and our water is harsh. Just like our skin gets dry our hair does too!

Tip #2: Everyone always wants to go lighter for summer and darker for winter….right? Well as a colorist I say do the opposite! Why you ask? Because in the summer you typically are more tan from being out in the sun so darker hair would look best since you will be tan unlike in the winter where you are typically pale. And vice versa… Go lighter in the winter cause you will be more pale and it won’t wash you out like dark hair would!

Tip #3: My way to get three days out of your hair…

Day 1: Keep it straight or blown out!

Day 2: Curl it.

Day 3: Put it up…. Bun life or ponytail. Add a braid or headband! Then repeat!

Now onto New Orleans…

Chelsea Barber

I think more clients should embrace their given texture and learn how to work with it. If your hair is curly, own it and nurture it with quality curl loving products.

Your hair is your crown so it cannot be hidden, but it can be taken care of.

The way clients take care of their hair can be a reflection of how they feel about themselves. So give it love. Find a stylist who is willing to turn you down and make better suggestions.

If they don’t believe your hair is cut out for a specific style and/or cut because it usually means they care about your hair. You want someone willing to guide you in the right direction and teach you how to take care of it.

These tips were great!  And thanks ladies for being a part of Beauty Week!

Beauty Week Q&A will be this weekend. So if you have a question just leave it in the comments below or on my social pages and we will answer it for you. How great is that?

SKINCARE IS THE BEST CARE!

When I was younger my focus was always on the makeup and the color. Then when I became a Pro Artist I started paying attention to the skin more. You must have skin prepped properly in order to achieve the best makeup look!

Now…As I am getting “older” I am more focused on my skin rather than all the color. Go figure!

Two things my skin can simply not live without are a deep exfoliation and a fantastic face mask! They make a world of a difference. I exfoliate every other day. A deep treatment once a month and face mask every two weeks. I like to alternate a deep cleansing mask with a hydrating mask. It honestly depends on how my skin is feeling that week! I have a whole bunch of products I like to use which you can find on my Instagram Stories later today…

To kick off Beauty Week I asked a few Skincare Pro’s to share some information with us. Some of their tips and tricks. You will see all of them below. Where to find them will be listed so that if they are in your area you can contact them for a consultation. Just click on their name or social page and you will be sent to them directly.

Be sure to tell them I sent you 🙂

I would also like to add that if you have any questions please leave them in the comments below for our Q&A this weekend!

Tip #1: Never, ever wash your face in the shower!! I have learned over the past 17 years of doing skin care on a professional level, that many people get into the habit of washing their face in the shower and this is a huge no, no!! Why you ask? The temperature of the water used to wash your body is usually much hotter than the temperature we should be washing our face with. When you wash your face with water that is too hot, it will strip your skins natural oil production and will dry your skin out causing premature wrinkling. Always wash your face with room temperature water. (Not very hot and not very cold either) as water that’s too cold, can strip your skin as well and dehydrate it. If you can’t get out of the habit of washing your face in the shower, simply change the temperature of the water right before you wash your face and make the water room temperature. You will see an improvement in the hydration of your skin, when you give this trick a go…

Tip #2: Be very gentle with your face when you wash and dry it every single day. Think of your skin as an elastic, at first it is very tight and will bounce right back when stretched however, the more you pull at that elastic, the looser it will become. Your skin works the same way as that elastic. When we are born we have lots of Collagen and elasticity on our skin. The older we get, our skin looses Collagen production and elasticity which leads to wrinkles and since your skin is aging every day, we need to play our part in preventing further damage. In a nut shell, be very gentle and do not pull and tug at your face, treat it delicately and you will preserve its appearance for years to come.

Tip #3: Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!! I can’t stress enough the importance of incorporating an exfoliant into your skin care routine. Your skin is constantly shedding dead skin cells every single day. These dead skin cells act as a barrier preventing any skin care products that you are using on your face to fully penetrate your skin and also will make your skin look dull. This is where exfoliation plays such an important part in your skin care routine. How often should you exfoliate? Every 3rd day is perfect. (If you exfoliate every single day, it will strip your skin and may even cause a rash) always exfoliate during the morning because your skin sheds skin while your sleep. Invest in a good quality exfoliant as not all exfoliants are created equal. Some drugstore exfoliants are too aggressive and can make your skin irritated. I absolutely love Pevonia’s Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser which I use on all of my clients when doing facials and we sell at my spa. If you have Rosacea or very sensitive skin, invest in a gentle exfoliant which is made for sensitive or Rosacea skin as using a harsh exfoliant on any kind of sensitive skin including anyone with acne, is never a good idea.

Tip #1: Commit to a Hydra Facial once a month to improve the appearance of skin and restore a youthful, healthy glow. These specific facials are great for all skin types so need need to shy away.

Tip #2: To “shave” time off a morning routine laser hair removal is THE BEST! And the best part is after 6-8 sessions of laser treatments there is no longer a need to shave. All you will need in one yearly touch up!

Tip #3: Eyebrow Microblading.*

Tips for Acne Sufferers

Tip #1: Change your pillowcases nightly or at least every other day because your face is soaking up product you have in your hair which could be apart of the reason you break out.

Tip #2: Invest in a ear piece so your phone never touches your face.

Tip #3: I cut down my dairy intake and started taking a daily probiotic. Removing dairy out my diet has been a bit difficult but when I look at my face it’s definitely worth it so a few tacos with sour cream and cheese don’t seem like a big deal anymore.

Now how was that for some in depth skincare knowledge?

All I know is that I will be changing my sheets tonight and taking my face wash out of the shower! How about you?

HOW TO ENGAGE WITH YOUR AUDIENCE

To piggyback off yesterday’s HOW TO GET SOCIAL! post I wanted to reiterate how important it is to engage with your audience, your followers and of course your friends…

Your customers and clients can be anywhere. You always want to be active online and as positive as possible everywhere you go. Grocery store, post office, mall etc.

That parking spot you just decided to pull into while the other car was waiting could have been a client. See the trend here…

Let’s focus on your social media platforms. When you share a pic or video on your Facebook, Instagram or Facebook do your followers comment? Or do you they just hit like?

I will admit it. I used to be a “liker” but why not engage? Try it. Engage after that “LIKE”. I promise it will teach you something. And share too! If you have other friends in business or a mentor just posted an incredible quote why not share it with your audience? It feels great to know that you have their support!

Engaging online is a great way to get recognized quicker if that is something you are striving for. I actually do it because I am obsessed with meeting new people. I have always been the person who wants to learn as much as I can about someone. I want to be able to connect them with others. Or maybe even partner up with them on projects! Networking has just always been in my blood…

You never know what someone may be going through each day so a tiny thing such a an emoji or comment on their post can really mean the world to them. Just saying…

Now go out there and engage. Let me know how it has changed you or your business over the next week or so.

One very important thing I would like to mention is that if a client or customer reaches out to you please do not ignore. Always always follow up! Because it is the right thing to do! And be sure to do it in a timely manner.

Please and thank you…

Until tomorrow…

As always sharing is caring and let me know what you think about this post. Leave me a little message in the comments below.

Have a great day 🙂

HOW TO — USE HASHTAGS

What is a hashtag?

A hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by a hash or pound sign (#) and used to identify messages on a specific topic used throughout the world on social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

What is a hashtag used for?

To explain this to you the simplest way possible they are like their own mini search engine that you design and/or include yourself in so that your content is recognized.

Example: I wanted to find other NMO patients like myself on Instagram so I searched #NMO #livingwithnmo #chronicillness #spoonie etc. And there my new friends magically appear. The same goes for business. Use hashtags that your customers and clients would use so that they can find YOU! For example: I am a #linkedincoach #onlinebusinesscoach #wordpresswebdesigner #podcaster etc.

I do the same when posting something health related pics on my feed so others can find me too! By doing so we are basically all incorporated into that searchable engine of that specific hashtag. Side note: You must have a public profile in order to appear! So do that now if you would like to be #found.

Many friends and clients who run a business ask me the same thing all the time!

What hashtags should I use?

My simple answer is always make a list! You are allowed 30 hashtags. In your Instagram Stories you are allowed 11. If you know me well enough by now I have a list for #everything. EVERYTHING! Do this in the “notes” section on your phone so it can then become a simple copy/paste to save you time!

Here is a little tip: Shrink the size of your hashtags and place your text over them so your IG story looks a lot cleaner. Also, place your hashtags for your post in the comments so that when you share your IG pic thee are not a million hashtags on the actual post that just showed up on Facebook or LinkedIn! If you have a question about this just leave it in the comments below so I can answer for you 🙂

By the way…Don’t be surprised if this researching takes a few hours. That is normal! This is all part of your marketing plan so time must be spent on it! It will all be worth it in the end. Promise…

To see the formula I use on my feed and how I post just hashtags in the comment section you check out my Instagram feed here…

If you want a client/customer? You have to think like one. What would they be typing? What hashtags are they using to find who or what they want? Use those words.

However, make it unique! Make it #STANDOUT!

YOU have to be able to #shinebright among the crowd. Especially when it comes to direct sales and marketing. There are hundreds and thousands of you trying to sell the same exact thing!

How are you going to stand out (besides amazing pics/graphics of course)? Do you want to start your own tribe and trend? My suggestion and answer to that is YES YOU DO! What you also want to do is create your own hashtag. Use the position you are in for a reason and create a movement. And this goes for any position out there!

Business Example: If I was someone looking for a jet to charter either to and from Las Vegas I would look under #lasvegasjets and there you would come across brokers and jets to choose from. I mean can it be any easier?

If you were interested in finding a specific type of business coach you would look under #businesscoach #linkedincoach #smallbusinesscoach #socialmediacoach. See the trend. It goes both ways. When you are trying to find something or someone that’s how you do it.

The best part about having an Instagram business account is that your followers can contact you right there and BOOM that could be an instant sale! Just from using the proper hashtag.

Can you even believe this is the day and age we live in now? It’s insane right?

Advice: Be very specific with your hashtags. Create them for an audience. Make them unique enough but specific for someone to want to engage with you not just like your pretty picture. Tell your story, introduce your self, create a conversation that others will want to engage with you.

Engagement: The whole point of using a hashtag is to honestly help you get seen and help create a conversation. You have to want to engage with your audience. Create those relationships. It can be for fun or for work. Either way just engage. Otherwise, why bother using a hashtag. I’m giving you this platform to share so definitely take advantage of it! Who knows? You may have made a new friend by the end of the day. #hashtags can do crazy things! Those stories will be for another time! #lol

Personal Use: #hashtags are a great idea for moms that want a simple search engine to find a pic they posted three years ago. Instead of scrolling through their feed for an hour they can simply look under their hashtag they have personally created. Sooo much easier right?

If you are a big traveler create a hashtag for each trip. There are so many apps out there right now that using those hashtags will then allow you to create a book using all those pics. You can literally design a book from an app in minutes. Great gift idea too!

Now for some #Hashtag humor…

I mean who doesn’t need a little Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake in their life?

Or maybe you are a Jonah Hill fan?
