HOW TO CREATE VISION AND HAPPINESS BOARDS

Hello and Happy Tuesday!

How many of you have heard of vision boards? Or maybe even happiness boards? They have been around for so many years. I feel like the wave of talking about them comes and goes. And I see it trending everywhere right now! Hence, why I wanted to write about it and because I LOVE creating them obviously…

As a born creative of course I have one. I actually have two and once had three. That was just too much I know. I’ll admit it. Once I get into my creative zone I just cannot stop FOR REAL!

Just the other day one of my friends text me asking how to create one? We used to live together so clearly she remembered my wall of cork boards and so I think this is why she called.

My answer was that you need to think and visualize what you want and/or where you see yourself going. In your personal life and career. I am a HUGE fan of putting your thoughts into the universe and creating these boards is one very fun and entertaining way of doing do.

I actually see a lot of work shops for vision boards trending all over the world in fact. Celebrating with some bubbly and creating a special space for others to create together is genius. I think I actually need to be a part of these one day.

When you are creating a personal vision and/or happiness board you can put pictures (from magazines, newspapers, print outs) of where you would like to travel, your favorite quotes, a cocktail napkin from a bar you once celebrated at etc.

As far as your board type goes I personally prefer cork boards but white boards patterned quilt and a section of a wall. It honestly depends on your style…

Your boards can consist of fun items you collect in your travels and sometimes on the street. No joke! I have a very large screw that ended up in my tire rushing to the Golden Globes from a few years ago. Random but it reminds me of that crazy day of running from room to room doing makeup for my clients.

So that infamous screw is there to remind me of that accomplishment and also the not so happy part where I just got screwed! Get it!

My happiness board has fortune cookie messages (because I’ve been collecting them for years), ads from magazines that I just love. I mean some of these I have now framed because I just love them so much! And they are years old, so we can now call them vintage I guess! lol

Blue Lagoon in Iceland (that’s a bucket list trip of mine) my favorite quotes and mantras are absolutely on one of my boards.

When I get into a funk or need to switch things up I redo them. This is why I love using push pins. It’s easy to make changes without ruining your project you’ve spent hours working on. When it comes to my “work” boards I change them every first of the month!

It is so good to refresh your goals and plans. It’s called life and sh*t happens whether or not you are prepared for it. Your life can change in a second. Just look at mine for example. Insane, scary and absolutely annoying at times but honestly looking at work I have created on these boards continues to keep me inspired  and motivated in all aspects; business and personal.

I Chose This Life Series will launch on Wednesday 9/6/17!

Whenever I have an idea I immediately write it down in one of my “famous” notebooks. Then when I decide it is time to give it life I start my post-it/cork board process. If you follow me on Instagram and Stories then you know what I am talking about. I guess you could say it is my version of a “Story Board”. You know the white boards with the photos on them you used to see when MTV actually played music videos? And they aired the “Making of the Video” show. Just like that!

My cork boards are the special place for me to put together the puzzle pieces that I have floating around in my head. I’m a very visual person so being able to write it down and push pin it up really helps me in the creative process. And I’m so OCD, so the fact that my push pins can be moved around makes the process completely stress-free! lol.

So a few months ago I began that process for the I Chose This Life Series. I knew when I launched The Happy Workaholic Podcast that I wanted to use it as a platform for other Entrepreneurs like myself to share their stories. After all…the show is about Business, Luxury Travel and Life! So it’s a perfect fit and made sense!

My guests will share the raw, real and relateable deal. The path they took to get them to where they are today. The milestones, the mishaps and everything in between. Everyone has a unique story and I want the show to share these stories for others to hear and be inspired and motivated by them. I want my listeners to know that no matter what the situation everything happens for a reason. And there is no need for you to ever give up on a dream. We all go through life with bumps in the road. And it makes us who we are today! Trust me on this! It’s just a different scenario for everyone. And you will learn that when listening to this amazing series…

THREE YEARS AGO TODAY…

It was exactly three years ago today that I decided I really needed to start writing down my thoughts on a daily basis. I had tried to journal before but my constant traveling around for work made it impossible for me to keep a consistent schedule. However, I was ready to try it again…

So three years ago on July 1st, 2014 I went out and bought a book filled with an abundance of blank pages and started to fill them with my thoughts. After a year or so I decided that some of those entries were going to become part of a docu-series which in the end did not work out. As I always say…Everything happens for a reason and I am thankful that it did not pan out. In all honesty, I wasn’t really ready to let the world in just yet. Side note: I had some serious NDA’s I was still locked into and would not be able to (legally) share a lot of my stories.

Once I confirmed the show was a no go I decided I wanted to turn these pages into a self-help book for others. So I then started that process. It was incredibly exhausting trying to piece together this insane puzzle (aka my life). I gave the book editing process a rest but continued to write every single day. It honestly became an addicting type of therapy. A good therapy. And one that I desperately needed! I also had decided on a name. I would call it The Happy Workaholic. The title alone described me and would fit others perfectly. It would be a name that others could relate to!

Cut to today…

July 1st, 2017. Three full years of writing. I know! It is crazy! I cannot even believe I have accomplished such a task as I am telling you about it now.

If you have been following me over the past year you would know that I have an autoimmune disease called Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO for short). This disease can leave you blind and paralyzed in the blink of an eye. Literally! You don’t know when it will happen which is honestly the scariest sh*t I have ever had to go through in my entire life. The best way to explain NMO is that it’s like an earthquake! It can hit hard and cause severe damage or smaller and more frequently with treatments in hopes of preventing another relapse (earthquake).

Throughout this past month of June I have taken time to give my body the rest it needed after 12 months of scans, lab work, hospital trips and treatments. I also needed to give my mind a rest as well as it is constantly going at full speed. Going through anything health related can take a serious toll; not only on your body, mind and spirit; but your relationships with others too. Your thoughts can become dark and your visions unclear. It’s quite scary to feel like you are becoming a different person. Almost like an outer body experience. And your stress level is always at an elevated level which is the worst thing for you. So I needed the time to be at peace with everything and stay as positive as possible with the changes that I have been having to make in my life. I needed the time to just be still and only worry about ME!

As someone who has always been extremely organized and scheduled; the hardest part of this new journey of mine is to learn how to just live each day because you never know when it can be your last and if a relapse with this disease will happen. I needed to give myself a more go with the flow mentality. Which by the way I am still working on! Ugh…It is SO HARD! I will admit each day I’m getting better. I think! I hope…

The reason why I am telling you this is because my everyday thoughts and journal writing that would eventually turn into a book is not in the cards for me right now! The process of writing a book could and would be incredible but not so much if I loose my vision and need to hire a ghost writer. And that would take even more time to explain to someone the last ten years of my life’s work. I’m not saying it will never happen. Just not at this time…

I want to be able to help others now! I want to use my voice and be heard for the ones that are not ready to do so. I want to share my stories and have a platform for others to be recognized for their work. That being said The Happy Workaholic Podcast was born. All of my stories are coming to life for you to hear rather than read…

I had to think of a Plan B just in case my health took a turn for the worst. See. That’s me! Always planning ahead! With a podcast I am still able to record (if something changes for me health wise) and I won’t have to wait to share my stories in a book. This is just one of the next steps in my life that I am able to move forward with and cannot wait to have you along for the ride and maybe even on my show!

As I browse through my social media this weekend I see so many friends enjoying the pool, beach and parties. Spending time laughing while out and about. As half of me wishes I was there I have set deadlines for myself for the weekend in order to create something SO SPECIAL. Hence, why I am on my computer right now and not in the sunshine. The other reason is because Las Vegas is hot as hell right now and being in the AC is a dream. Not to mention being in my comfy clothes on the couch checking off my to-do’s feels fantastic. A glass of wine in hand doesn’t hurt either! I’ll be having one of those shortly. I have had to make so many sacrifices over the last few years so missing out on a holiday weekend for me is a piece of cake! Don’t get me wrong, I am not complaining as I chose this life and to set these deadlines myself because I want the bigger picture!

GOING WITH THE FLOW…

Being in San Diego over the past week has made me realize a few things. Slowing down, breathing and just living would be a few of them (which I am in the process of relearning). It is tough. I am not going to lie about that! I have had to comes to terms with the fact that it is ok to just BE. Be still and be true to myself and everything around me. You need to just inhale and exhale your surroundings as well as embrace the new ones and most importantly enjoy life!

Life does not always go as planned and I have recently realized to go with the flow and not get upset that I do not have all the control in my life. Life is way too short to stress the small stuff and even the very big stuff. Everything happens for a reason and that is how I choose to live MY life.

The point of me writing this is because I had originally planned to launch a few more additions to my website and brand this month but really sat down and had a chat with myself this morning. PS I recommend this to everyone! So I have decided to take another 30 days to prep, reorganize, finalize, refresh, recharge and plan ahead for the remainder of the year.

I also need a little bit more time to detox from all of my medical procedures I have had over the last year. It has taken a toll and I am feeling it now! I also need time to get used to new medications and way of life. It is a very physically, mentally and emotionally draining time and need to let myself breathe and just “BE”. This is honestly very difficult for me to do but I know it has to be done so I am doing it!

I have many creative projects in the works and I need this time off from blogging and social media schedules to do just this. Be creative. Be in my own space.

I will be back in July with many announcements that I cannot wait to share with each and every one of you!

WHY I’M GETTING PERSONAL ON LINKEDIN!

Every now and then you will see a post on LinkedIn that you know belongs on Facebook’s feed. Am I right? And you have also seen those posts from LinkedIn members asking why selfies are here on a “business” platform. It just doesn’t make sense when you are networking. This I agree with…

However, I will admit I have my Instagram account connected to my Facebook Page which then posts to LinkedIn. Why do I do that you ask? Well I know it doesn’t make much sense for many brands but it does for mine. The reason for that is because I AM MY BRAND. I want my LinkedIn connections to know about and visit my Facebook and Instagram and see a more personal side of me. It also builds more of a trust with my audience especially when I am pitching or coaching and growing my clientele. It shows I am real and also love to cook! lol

Not everyone will agree with this technique but it is what works for ME! When I coach clients and help build their brand some of them ask me if they should do what I am doing. And to be honest, most of the time I say NO! The reason behind that is because it just doesn’t make sense for their brand. You have to do what makes the most sense when building your business and not follow a trend etc. Everyone is different and this is what I do when I work with clients. I create and customize a very specific outline for them to follow which in the end will bring them more sales. And that is what we all want right? Now…The reason why I am getting REALLY PERSONAL on LinkedIn lately is because I have an extremely rare autoimmune disease called Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO). And long story short I started posting LIVE videos on Facebook to bring awareness to it as soon as I found out. After a few videos, thousands of views and hundreds of messages I realized that what I needed to do was bigger. I needed to create some sort of platform for others to share their voice to be heard too! Not just NMO patients but anyone going through any illness or heartache. I also needed this space to be available for friends and family members to visit when looking for information or answers for their loved ones.

That place I created is called the JUST FOR US COMMUNITY. You can learn everything about JFUC at www.justforuscommunity.org.

Why am I writing about this on LinkedIn? Because this is not just going to be a space on Facebook. This is going to be something bigger. And I need your help!

The JUST FOR US COMMUNITY is something that I know is needed because I have lived through some serious health issues over the last year and with my experience of going through these circumstances, staying strong and fighting I know I am able to help so many other people. Plus the feedback and messages I have already received from complete strangers around the world proves to me this is needed.

I am bringing awareness to this community for not only patients and families but doctors, hospitals, researchers, non-profits, press, foundations and many more outlets. I am putting this community together because it is something that has to be available and also because my gut is telling me I can’t stop here. It’s telling me more is needed. I always go with my gut and follow my heart so here we are today.

So this is why I am getting personal. I am telling you my story today but tomorrow it will belong to someone else. I am sharing the good, the bad and the unsettling sometimes but guess what? That is what is needed to bring awareness to some of these diseases your everyday person may be fighting whether they choose to share or not. It is the real deal!

So back to why I need your help! I would truly appreciate if you would share this post for me. I am looking for those doctors, researchers, labs, technicians, nurses and average Joe’s to help me share this community in order to help others who are in need of the JUST FOR US COMMUNITY. I want everyone out there going through something to know that there is a safe place available for them to share their feelings, tears and of course get a dose of a little laughter. As that is always the best medicine.

HOW TO STAY ORGANIZED IN 2017

Hello and Happy Monday!

A couple of my friends who run online businesses like myself have been asking me what I do to stay organized. How I prepped for 2017. So I thought that I would share my tips and how to stay organized throughout 2017 with you here. I also want to say that I am one of the most organized people you will ever meet and I still had work to be done so please know that this “stuff” takes time. Little by little you will be able to cross more off that list and eventually feel lighter and leaner in your work and personal space like I do now!

Below are a few tasks that I have completed in my personal life, my office area as well as online and on my devices. I have also decided to continue doing this quarterly throughout 2017 to keep me on my toes. So don’t stress about getting it all done at once. Just start! Light your favorite candle, put on your favorite music and get this organizing party started today!

Office

Shredded $15 worth of unneeded paperwork, notebooks and tax info from years past. Not sure why I didn’t do this years ago. I was shredding docs from 1998. Really?

Created a new Vision Board for 2017. I am a very visual person so if I have something to look at every day it helps me stay focused. I have post-its on a cork board and goals I want to reach. I even have my favorite fortunes from cookies. Yes I collect them! 

Got rid of battery packs, chargers and electronics that were no longer working. Really not sure why I had a freezer bag full of these. Set up an EBay store and sell them if they do work!

Organized folders, office supplies and paperwork. Labels, sharpies decorative boxes, glass jars or vases and paperclips are best for this. I just cleaned out a storage unit so this took the longest but felt so good when I finished.

Created a special space for all of my journals. These are my pride and joy. 

Put together a 12 month plan/calendar so I can see everyday what I need to be working towards and to stay ahead of the game. I have always focused on a month at a time. This year I wanted to map out my year and focus on quarterly goals. So far it’s working out for me.

Put away all my old planners and set up my new one for 2017. For some reason I still cannot part with a few of these but at least they are all in one place now. My new planner however is amazing and I am obsessed with it! The best part is that my best friend gave it to me as a Christmas gift. I am extremely picky with my planners and she bought the exact style I love and it has anchors all over it. Love that touch of style as I am originally from RI so the anchor holds a close place to my heart. I’m always posting it on my Instagram. That’s how much I LOVE it!

Set up a work schedule for myself so that I do not feel overwhelmed with my workload. I am one to stay on my computer for 12-14 hours at a time which is awful. I know I can’t do that anymore with my NMO so I have set up times to be on, then research then back on then prep meals, work out etc.

Personal

Donated two suitcases worth of clothes, shoes, and misc items to Goodwill. I know I have more this is just the beginning. I also have a collection of medicine bottles growing to donate to a country who recycles them. I just found out about this charity. I wish I knew about it in May. I would have 100 bottles by now.

Created a new Happiness Board for 2017. I like to have a cork board for work and a cork board for ME! This includes quotes, pictures, just anything that puts a smile on my face 🙂

Add a new thought for my Happiness Jar daily. I created this in December and have been putting a new thought in every day. When you are having a tough day just or at the end of the year you pull out your thoughts and read them. 

Journal every single morning. I’ve been doing this since July 2014. 

Trying to eat gluten free and dairy free and intake less meat products weekly. I can absolutely see the changes in my body when eating this way. I know it is best for my health so trying my best to stick with it.

Walk at much as I can throughout the week. I’ve gone the past two days in a row. I am so sore right now but on a mission to get back out there today. I tune up my music and power walk for about 3-4 miles. Trying to do 5X this week. Wish me luck…

Meditate daily. Even if for only ten minutes. I go through phases with this. Going to get back on track this week.

Online

Completed a re-brand of kellyanngorman.com.

Updated every single social media page I have. It’s very important to keep your brand and message consistent all across the board. I just finished my Pinterest boards this morning. 

Unsubscribed from hundreds of emails that I no longer needed.

Deleted emails and social media accounts that I no longer used.

Created thank you messages for all my new followers in the notes section on my phone. I have thousands to thank so this message makes it so much easier to do.

Computer

Put together an Excel Spreadsheet to track all of my social media, LinkedIn and newsletter subscribers. I tally them every Monday night and at the end of the month to see which outlet is working best for me. I started doing this in a notebook a few months ago but decided an Excel sheet would be best!

Backed up all files in two different places. 10 years of digital files takes forever. Times two!

Organized desktop. I went from 20 folders to 6. Looks so clean now!

Took off all notification pop ups.

Deleted apps I haven’s used in a few months.

Deleted email accounts I no longer needed on phone.

Deleted notes I did not need.

Organized photos into new albums and deleted one the one I did not use.

Organized my iBooks App.

Tablet

Took off all social media and unused apps. I like to use my tablet to watch my webinars or videos while I work on my computer. I use my phone for social media and music. Three devices at once is normal right?

Well that’ it. I still have a few more to check off my list but I think I am off to a great start. I feel so much better working in my space now. Try it! And again leave me a comment below if you need some help or another tip. I would love to help you out…

Oh! I almost forgot to mention my online schedule for you! This is so important to post so your followers know where to find you…And most importantly it keeps me accountable knowing that I must post and follow the outline I have created…

Friday: Record new show for The Happy Workaholic Podcast. Post LIVE! IG Stories

Lastly, I have been spending more time on Instagram Stories and Facebook so feel free to follow me there.

Fun. Fearless. Focused.

A couple of months ago I created a private Facebook group called Fun. Fearless. Focused.

Originally this group was only for my 15 Steps To Success and 11 Lessons through LinkedIn clients. However, a few weeks ago I decided to open it up to other Small Business Owners and Entrepreneurs like myself. Woman who just want to meet other woman whether they work, in the middle of a career change, book or move. This is the place for you.

This platform will allow everyone to network as well as keep each other inspired and motivated. A place to find that work/life balance. A place to laugh and learn with some new friends online.

And I would love for YOU to be a part of it!

Starting next Friday I will be going LIVE! Probably around 6pm PST. I have so many topics I want to discuss with you. So many tips and tricks of (a few trades) I want to share with you.

I plan on doing my LIVE videos every Friday (schedule permitting). My list of topics is quickly growing and cannot wait to share them. I am really looking forward to this and hope you will join us. Also, please feel free to share this post. The more the merrier in this group 🙂
